READING

  • No One Is Talking About This by Patrica Lockward – Loved it. So different, and smart – and sad. It really makes you think about our online lives, and how random and disconnected everything is. I haven’t read anything like it.

  • Such a Fun Age

  • Stages of Grief by William DeresiewiczWhat the pandemic has done to the arts – Some scary stats. A depressing read… ‘In 1982, the top 1 percent of musicians earned 26 percent of concert revenue. By 2017, the top 1 percent earned 60 percent’. The article explores our devouring of the arts, for free; ‘ We need an art movement like the one we have for food, a movement for responsible consumption’.

  • John Cooper Clarke The Luckiest Guy Alive

  • Sinead O’Conner interview in The New York Times

  • Why We Speak More Weirdly at Home ‘As kids fumble and play with sounds and meaning, their cutesy word experiments can be picked up by the whole family, sometimes to be passed on between generations as verbal heirlooms of sorts’ I love the phrase ‘Verbal heirloom’ - my friend couldn’t pronounce her name properly when she was little so ‘Elisabeth became ‘Elisafluff’ and she is and has always been since, ‘Fluff’.

  • Flora Borsi is a Hungarian artist who I’ve followed for a while. I love her self-portrait photography. So surreal and clean. Ants for eyelashes <3

  • Banksy Bob Ross made me smile - and reminded me of the Mountain Dew ad (which I love)

  • Insane drone shot film of a bowling alley by JayByrdFilms

  • “Beyond Noh” by Patrick Smith Very cool short that flicks through thousands of masks to the beat of a drum.

  • Cosmo Illustration – Illustrations with humour; my favourite kind. Comic-like in design – eyecatching and just lovely. Lots of very cool album covers. A new girl crush is born.

  • Also this chick! Helena Hauss creates incredible illustrations with ballpoint pens. Also French (as is Cosmo, and my ultimate favourite Carine Brancowitz) there’s something in the water in Paris and I want to drink it.

FEBRUARY

WATCHING

  • Promising Young Woman – Have been looking forward to this for ages. The trailer paints a very different picture, which is refreshing, but I was a bit disappointed it wasn’t as ‘badass’ as I thought it would be.

  • Call My Agent - Season 3. Trying to refrain from binging because I just don’t want it to end. Camille Cottin is the coolest woman…

  • Game Night

  • Meet Joe Black

  • New Adam Curtis – Nihilism is the answer apparently

  • Punch Drunk Love

  • Magnolia – loved! (Have only ever seen the frog scene, before now)

  • The Nest

  • Behind her eyes – worth it for the batshit ending. Very slow though…

  • Whitehouse Farm

  • Asparagus Tips - weird short film lols

READING

  • Exciting Times, by Naoise Dolan – Witty, real, complex characters. A love triangle with our narrator, Ava, at the centre – bit of an anti hero, who I warmed towards. Lots of nice bits that look at the English language in an intersting way (Ava is teaching English in Hong Kong). Funny and mean. Will definitely lookout for her next book. Love the cover too.

  • Various articles on NFT’s.

  • Article on R29 about Conspirituality – a term coined in 2011 to describe people in the spirituality space who are also attracted to conspiracy theories. I’ve noticed this in my yoga class – when that was a thing.

  • Adam Curtis explains it all (New Yorker)
